Our Guide to Isla Holbox

You really can escape in Holbox. With intermittent Wifi, no cars and a stunning stretch of white sand beach, it’s the perfect place to unwind. While the scene is more rough and ready than nearby Tulum, there are plenty of buzzy bars and a few live music spots to get carried away in. Come 10pm you can find the locals drinking and dancing at Hot Corner and if you manage to beat the jet lag (we must admit we didn't), a DJ spins tracks on the beach at Cariocas into the early hours of the morning.

Here are our favourite places to get carried away in Holbox

- DAY -

Isla Holbox Raices Beach Club

Best for: Fresh seafood and good music. A must for lunch but also great in the evening.
Eat: Lobster!
Wear: Arima Frill in Papaya with Mango Yellow bottoms.
Our Tip: Buy a coconut from the man on the beach. Once you’ve finished drinking it ask him to cut it open and he will bring chilli salt to sprinkle over it.

Best for: A relaxed boat trip to see some of the nature on 3 uninhabited islands surrounding Holbox.
Drink: Rum and pineapple juice and plenty of water.
Wear: Savannah Frill Swimsuit.
Our tip: It's worth asking around in town on prices for these trips. We managed to get a boat to ourselves (6 people) for 2500 pesos. Ask them to include a cooler with ice so you can bring your own refreshments on the boat.  Flamingo season is officially from April to October but there were still quite a few around in November when we did the trip.

Best for: Feeling a million miles from home.
Drink: An ice cold beer or cocktail served from a very rustic bar.
Wear: Arima Frill in Papaya with Ochre bottoms.
Our tip: Hire a bike and cycle past the airport to find a secluded beach with hammocks in the water and a great little bar.

Best for: Enjoying the sparkling sea from above.
Drink: The Almarita (tequila, lime, chaya nette and cucumbers)
Wear: Castara bandeau in Azure and Azure bottoms.
Our Tip: Take a dip in their rooftop pool after you get hot and salty from walking the split.

Sundowners on beach in Isla Holbox

Best for: A no-frills sundowner with a view that's hard to forget.
Drink: A beer or soft drink from the local corner shop.
Wear: High-waisted trousers in Sea Green over whichever bikini you have been wearing that day.
Our tip: Stay on the beach until the sun goes down and then head to the pier for the best view of the sunset.

-NIGHT-

@annikavarik
Best for: A family run restaurant with colourful Mexican decor.
Drink: The biggest margaritas or mojitos you have ever seen.

Our tip: A good place to come if you need to pay by card (most places in Holbox are cash only). Keep your credit card on hand for the shop next door too.

Best for: Pizza!
Eat: Lobster pizza or opt for your favourite toppings to make it your own.
Wear: High-waisted trousers in Ochre and your favourite holiday t-shirt.
Our tip: The chairs aren’t the comfiest so you may want to take your pizza on to the beach and enjoy it there instead.
